The ACB Guide to Style: For Grooms

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Ok, so one of the questions we get most here at A Charleston Bride isn’t where to find the bride a dress- but where to find clothes for the groom! Men’s formal wear can be tough, so we’ve put together a list of our favorite spots here in Charleston to find the best suits, bow ties, and the rest of spring’s hottest men’s formal fashion.

High Cotton Ties
This place is the place to go for southern attire.  They carry 100% cotton bow ties and cummerbunds of all colors and prints. A colorful bow tie at a spring wedding is a fun way to give the groom a pop of color without taking focus away from how great he looks in his suit (and next to his bride). Here are a few of our favorites:

Green and Gold Linen Stripe Bow Tie

Black Houndstooth Bow Tie

Soft Carolina Blue Stripe Bow Tie

Tidewater Chambray Bow Tie
Ben Silver
We are absolutely crazy about these black and white dot accessories from Ben Silver. From pocket squares to braces, Ben Silver does the dot right- not too cheesy, not over-done, but just right.
Black & White Spot Pocket Square
Black Silk Braces with White Dots
Found on King Street in Charleston, Jos. A. Bank has the perfect the suit for your soon-to-be-hubby. Rather than having your man stand beside you at the alter in a rented tux, send him to Jos. A. Bank to buy his own, personalized suit. He can pick the color, vest, and cut all to his liking. For spring weddings, we are seeing quite a lot of grooms in khaki suits and fun-colored ties. We are really digging this trend! It’s great to see a groom’s personality shine through on his wedding day with a little bit of color rather than your typical black-and-white tuxedo. And these summer weight suits are great for our South Carolina warm, spring weather.

Laurie + Jeff

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Once upon a time…

A girl married a boy at a marvelously magical affair. Held at the William Aiken House in downtown Charleston, Laurie and Jeff joined hands and said “I do” in a beautiful ceremony, amidst a garden of hanging lanterns and white roses. They danced beneath a tent of royal blue and dined on deliciously rich wedding cake before riding away towards their happily ever after in a black taxi car. We are so lucky to be in a business that makes fairytales come to life.

Witness a hint of that night’s magic by viewing the lovely photographs taken by Juliet Elizabeth Photography below.

An Ode to Love

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Dear Reader,

Valentine’s Day is upon us once again! My, did that come quick. Flowers, chocolates, and cut-out paper hearts are in every store window and at every market checkout isle. But remember: Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love, not of fancy cards or flowers. You may be celebrating a love for a plus one or of love for yourself- either way we all should remember today that all you need is love. To commemorate this lovely day, we’ve put together a collection of the most timeless love affairs and the most beautiful brides. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Leah + John Warick

Friday, February 10th, 2012

The first word that comes to mind when remembering the wedding of Leah Skewes and John Warick  is: fun. It was a celebration of two people who love life and who love each other. We strived to bring the fun and energy of the couple’s personalities into the design of this wedding. Held at Lowndes Grove, the couple married on the serene banks of Charleston’s Ashley River. After saying “I do,” they walked into a tent of royal blue and ate, drank, and were merry beneath twinkling chandeliers and sparkling lights. Guests snacked on candies (of only blue or pink) before sitting at tables topped with pink roses and blue dining plates. Leah and John danced the night away, their smiles beaming brighter than the overhead moon. Take a peek into this fabulous affair with these photographs by Charlotte Elizabeth.

Creative Save the Dates

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

Each and every aspect of a wedding is designed to represent the couple’s personalities and tastes, from the flowers to the food to the color scheme or theme. But we think one of the most fun ways that a couple’s personality shines through is in their save the date cards. Much less formal than the actual wedding invitation, the save the date card can be colorful and quirky, unique and inspired. Do you and your soon-to-be-hubby love scrabble? Send a board-game-themed card. Are you both avid travelers? Send a paper airplane! Check out some of our favorite unique save the date ideas below:

We’re Smitten!!

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

A Charleston Bride had the honor of teaming up with stylist Alexandra Munzel and photographer Evan Laettner to style and shoot two wedding looks for the September/October edition of e-magazine Smitten. Launched in July 2011, Smitten is the “look book of wedding fancy”- containing beautiful photography, layouts, and real wedding editorials.

On July 27, A Charleston Bride joined Ms. Munzel and Mr. Laettner at the Legare Waring House at Charles Towne Landing to create a non-traditional yet still attainable look in both attire and setting. Ms. Munzel styled the models from head to toe with gorgeous gowns, jewelry, and shoes, as ACB created different sets with furniture provided by GDC Home Furnishing.

“It was so great to work as a team with both a stylist and a photographer,” ACB’s Carrie Glasscock said of the shoot. “To step outside of our typical wedding planning pattern to create something solely stye-driven was a lot of fun.”

Claire Gallam + Elliot Volkman

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

On March 25, 2010, Claire Gallam and Elliot Volkman were wed at the beautiful William Aiken House here in Charleston, South Carolina. The deep blue accents matched the beautiful blue skies as the bride’s eyes twinkled far more bright than the flames of the hanging lanterns. The photographs taken by Richard Israel capture this wedding’s combination of modern elegance and shabby chic. The gorgeous chandeliers, the pink and white roses, and the pearls that adorned Mrs. Volkman were beyond breathtaking. The do-it-yourself accents among the luxurious furnishings of the William Aiken House created a glamorous but very personal wedding that truly reflected our lovely couple. We loved Claire and Elliot’s exit beneath sparklers held by their loved ones- what a fun way to end the wedding with a bang!

12 Vendors we’re most thankful for in 2011

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

We’ve said it over and over again in the office, “We’re only as good as our vendors are”.  We’ve been burned by some, but others have gone to great lengths to not only clean up someone else’s mess, but make the situation better and brighter.  They will do almost anything to make our events the best they can possibly be and for that, we are eternally grateful.

12. The Bob Williams Duo~

Bob & Mike have worked with us for many many years and always bring a smile to our faces as we hear them play songs like “Under the Bridge” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers with their classical guitar & violin!  It’s not odd for an entire table to break out in song during one of our receptions.  We appreciate their eagerness to please especially when a client changes her music selections the night before her wedding.  They never shoot the messenger and for that, we are so grateful!

11.) The Wedding Row~

The “Ultimate Resource for Charleston Weddings” is right!  We love this wedding blog almost as much as we love it’s author/founder Della MacNicholas.  She’s got vision, talent and amazing entreprenurial spirit.  With the launch of her new iPhone application, Wedding Row,  this lady is all things wedding!! She has supported us both professionally and personally over the years and for that, we thank you!

10.) Event DRS~

This specialty rental company has played a major role for us in 2011 offering unique and specialty items for our clients.  From their custom bars to farm tables to glassware, Matt & Co. worked hard to find the missing pieces to our ever expanding/changing puzzles. If it was something we needed that they didn’t have, they helped us find it or they made it!

9.) Moore Make Up & Affair Hair~

These two incredibly talented artist are two of the very first people we call after booking a wedding.  They are highly sought after for not only transforming women into works of art, but also for their professionalism.  And, let’s be honest, they see some behind-the-scenes drama that could generate a New York Times Bestseller!  But, they take it all in stride becoming our clients’  confidant/mediator/stylist for a day.   We often times pull some last minute switch-a-roos on them and they always accommodate with a smile.

8.) Richard Israel Photography~

Richard is our “go to” when we want amazing images with a fun and easy going photographer.  Ask any client of ours and they’ll tell you that he is not only ridiculously talented, but a BLAST to work with.  It’s so effortless for him that you almost think he hasn’t taken any photos at all!  But, the images he produces are shocking and can leave you in tears.  He shows up early to take great set up shots (because we drive him nuts about it) for us which in turn gets us featured in magazines and blogs.  He just totally rocks.

7.) Cru Catering~

We’ve worked with many, many caterers over the years and very few are as fabulous as this group!  Jenny, Emily and Chad have this whole customer service thing down to a science.  Throw in one crazy talented chef/owner, John Zucker, and you’ve got an award-winning team that will blow you away at the very first bite.  If you’ve ever had the opportunity to attend one of their events or have a tasting in their kitchen, you know what we’re talking about! From $150/head to $35/head, they help our clients create the best menu at any price point and for that, we thank you!

6.) Patrick Properties Hospitality Group~

We are lucky enough to work at one of their properties at least a two dozens times a year.  The William Aiken House & Lowndes Grove Plantation are hands-down the most sought after venues in Charleston and if you’ve seen these properties, it’s no surprise!  They are both meticulously maintained, sending the visitor back over 200+ years when the homes were originally built.  Our clients literally swoon when they take the tour. On top of all that, sprinkle in one insanely talented Master Chef,  Nico Romo, and you’ve got a menu that’s as amazing as their property.  We are so thankful for the sales managers, event managers, and the Goldman’s!

5.) Wedding Cakes by Jim Smeal~

We honestly cannot say enough good things about Jim & Alejandro!  They make our jobs (pertaining to the cake anyway) so easy because their work says it all.  No sales pitch needed.  Our clients are like puddy in his hands and so are we!  Not only is his artistry one of the nations best, but the cakes actually taste fabulous!  Thank you, thank you, thank you for always having room for our clients on your busy calendar!

4.) Tim Willoughby~

So we stumbled upon this amazing talent (I’m rolling my eyes because those words aren’t nearly good enough to describe Tim) in 2009 and cannot get enough of him!  He’s laid back, fun, and when he shoots a wedding, you can almost guarantee it will be featured in some magazine or blog.

3.) Snyder Event Rentals~

Not a single ACB event has taken place over the past 10 years without this company being an integral part of it’s success. From the rentals to the bar & lounge, they take care of us like no other!  If there is anything at all we need, they happily oblige.  We adore the office staff as well as the delivery guys.  They put up with our detailed requests (i.e. “I think the aisle needs to be 6 inches wider. Can you please re-arrange the 200 chairs?…Thanks and sorry!”) and never complain.  We simply adore them!

2.) Studio-R-Design~

Where to begin…. let’s see.  Oh yeah, THANK YOU!  Rachael & Allison are truly amazing (they would come up with a more unique and stylish word) designers/collegues/friends.  Their creations set the style tone for many of our events.  We lean on them for inspiration and they never disappoint!  They keep us on task with their gentle reminders (“We need this content STAT!”) and pull through in the tightest pinches. Like many planners in Charleston, they’re our only recommendation for custom stationary.  Awwww, we want a group hug right now!

1.) Technical Event Company~

Todd & Brandon feel like family to us.  They are our yang, our other half.  We call them to help create magical event designs and we don’t only mean with lighting.  They are visionaries and genuinely want to make every event a show-stopper which they do.  Having them on site during an event releases an enormous amount of stress from us.  If a light bulb goes out, our knights in shining armour ride up in their ForeRunner and replace it in the blink of an eye. :) In all seriousness though, they really do feel like an extension of us and we couldn’t be more thankful to have them on our team.  We’ve even dubbed ourselves the “TEC-ettes” whether they like it or not!

To those of you who aren’t on this list, trust us when we say that it was NEAR IMPOSSIBLE to keep it to just 12 vendors.  We hemmed and hawed for days over it…  In the end, we are humbled to be part of the Charleston wedding scene for the past 10 years.  It is full of nationally renowned talented people that are as friendly as they are gifted.  What you all did for us at the August Wedding Planners Luncheon will never be forgotten.  For reasons you all know, while we had one of our most successful years in 2011, WE ARE READY FOR 2012!

xoxo,

Melissa, Carrie, Leigh, Jonie & Amy

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

We are always so excited to be featured on the ultimate wedding blog, Style Me Pretty!  The wedding of Lauren Oakley & Zane Schwenk was one of the most fabulous and fun events in recent memory.  From the stationary, flawlessly designed by the gals at Studio R Design, to the flowers to the killer custom lighting by TEC, this wedding was oozing glamour.

Your ‘do for the “I do”

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Location- check. Flowers-check. Music-check. Dress-check. After months and months of planning and anticipation, it’s finally the big day. But everyone knows that as important as a perfect wedding is, the thing people are going to remember the most is how gorgeous the bride looked.

Enter our talented hair and make-up professionals to make the sure the bride is absolutely as stunning as she can be. Carrie McCleod of Paper Dolls Wedding Hair and Makeup calls herself a “hopeless romantic” and can’t get enough of wedding hair and makeup.

Though brides are naturally gorgeous without makeup, Carrie makes sure yours is flawless

“I love when a bride looks at herself in the mirror when I’m finished and I can see in her smile that she loves the way she looks. There are so many touching moments that I get to witness and be a part of at every wedding that I do. I think that my absolute favorite is when the Dad sees his little girl for the first time and starts to cry. Every girl deserves to find love and every bride deserves to feel beautiful on her wedding day!” Carrie says.

Short hair or long, accessories or veils, Carrie can do it all

Another of our favorite stylists is Tanesha Dupree of Affair Hair by Tanesha, who discovered her gift for cutting hair at 13 (the age most of us are just getting over cooties).  Her hair styles are well, works of art.

Tanesha's hair promises to take you from the red carpet to real life

“Hair has always been one of my many canvases and my brushes mirror those of any great artist.Making hair beautiful has always been “my thing” long before I knew it was “my thing”. As a child it was “something to do” but as an adult it is “what I do” and I hope I have the pleasure of doing it for you,” Tanesha says.

Tanesha's do's have gotten more compliments than the dress

Celebrating her tenth anniversary making Charleston brides beautiful with Moore Make Up, Leslie Moore is a makeup artist with a mission: make every woman look and feel her absolute best.

Leslie Moore wants you take people's breath away by being the most stunning bride ever

Leslie says “Something happens when a woman feels radiant, confident, and absolutely beautiful…something happens to them on the inside- it’s like a switch or a spark. I feel if I am lucky enough to have anything to do with that moment, or better yet, if I have the opportunity to instruct them how to get that on their own…then that’s what it’s all about. That’s the big picture!”
