    Weddings Unveiled | Spring 2008

    Mary & Lee, June 22, 2007

Lee and Mary waited a few months to begin wedding planning, soaking in the joy and attention of their new engagement. ...Mary hired Carrie Glasscock with A Charleston Bride to plan their Southern infused affair. "Carrie just got what I wanted to do," says Mary. "She'd come up with suggestions, and it was perfect, or I would tell her what I was thinking and she would spin off an idea that would make it better. She was always coming up with ideas. She made it so pleasurable, and I had a really carefree day."

    Under the Oaks

Rockville, that sweet little fishing village on Wadmalaw Island just 40 minutes out of town, is the epitome of sleepy Southern charm. So when it came to planning Sarah Glenn and Kevin Smith's wedding there on the back lawn of the bride's parents' waterfront home, event designer Melissa Barton of A Charleston Bride simply took her cues from the inspiring surroundings. The result was a vibrant and low-key but festive day that began with a ceremony at an 1850s whitewashed church, then a reception within walking distance. There, under ancient live oaks and surrounded by bouquets that Melissa says "looked like they were picked out of a garden." 200 guests kicked off their shoes and danced to beach music as trawlers glided past and into the night.

    Holiday in Spain

Local even planner Melissa Barton, owner of A Charleston Bride, loves an excuse to throw a party. “Having something specific to celebrate infuses a gathering with that extra sense of excitement,” says Barton. “But don't feel you have to stick to the traditional American holidays and events — try going for something a little out of the ordinary.” For a summertime soirée, Spain's annual Pamplona Festival is just the ticket. “Each morning begins with the legendary Running of the Bulls,” Barton explains. “There's so much energy in the air, and everything comes alive in celebration of this event...”

    Victorian Charmer

The challenge of designing a reception centered on "a country tea luncheon" fazed event planner Melissa Barton a little at first. "I have to admit, shabby chic is really not my style, " she laughs. "I like everything sleek, matched, and polished." Never one to shy away from a challenge, however, she imagined the tastes of a mythical bride -- "she'd be the kind of girl who shops at vintage stores and antique malls" -- and threw herself into planning an early afternoon reception with a heavy dose of Victoriana.
